The building blocks of the legacy SDH network are terminal multiplexer, add drop mux ( ADM) and a cross connect switch. The MSH 86 is one such type of digital cross – connect switch ( DXC). The function of the MSH 86 is to cross connect traffic between the aggregate streams. This is done for grooming of SDH traffic and also for re-routing. The standard naming convention for cross connects is for example 4/1 where the first digit refers to the data rate of the signal being terminated and the second the data rate of the signal being cross connected.
